Red kites

Saturday, March 3rd, 2012

I’ve just got back from Mid Wales where I’ve spent the past 2 days photographing red kites and buzzards. It’s been about 8 years since my last visit to Gigrin and they have since added 2 tower hides which are great for getting you up a little higher and at eye level with the birds. It was also nice to bump into my 2020vision collegue Chris Gomersall the day I arrived, even if he had managed to take up both tower hides with a Nikon training group – thanks Chris! ;)

The weather was mixed, the first day being bright and sunny so I managed to get the classic flight shots against a blue sky. The second day was much cloudier but when the sun burst out it lit the kites against a dark sky – my favourite type of light for flight photography, so all in all it was a very successful trip.

One of my favourite images came right at the end of the second day. As the sun was getting lower it burst through a gap in the clouds and I managed to grab some landscape shots with about 20 kites circling overhead – not very easy to see at this size!
